“The governor must submit to judges today a proposal to reduce prison overcrowding by 40,000 inmates, as ordered. He's likely to offer a mix of old and new ideas -- and to push the midnight deadline.”
Federal Judges have asked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to come up with a proposal in order to help reduce inmates. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked for an extension of the deadline, and his deadline is coming to an end today at midnight. According to Michael Rothfeld, the governor’s plan consists of new and old ideas. An old idea that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has brought up is spending billions of dollars constructing new prisons. This plan would obviously take years before it can actually happen and has become dismissed. They are also planning to not monitor as much the less serious offenders and improve supervision on the more serious offenders. Immigrants are also part of the proposal. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will send undocumented prisoners to federal government so that they will be deported in order to help out the budget. I really hope that undocumented immigrants are not deported by just doing something that is not serious, and that it also does not put in danger the public safety. In order to find out how his proposal will actually work, we will have to wait until later to find out.

Building prisons is irrational and inhumane. The governmennt should not waste serious amounts on money on a "prison system". I think it would be pathetic if large amounts would be given to prisons but not to schools. Arnold would dissapoint many if he truly wants to carry out a strategy where he discriminates immigrants in jails. It's going to be difficult for him, but trying to reform the jail system would be the best thing: reduce the number of incarcerated.

ReplyDeleteSid presents a very good point. Plus I believe that by planning to build more prisons, it reveals a pessimistic outlook of what the government thinks of society, precisely in Los Angeles. Yes, unfortunately crime will always plague humanity, but as a community we must fight towards minimizing it. Perhaps the money can go to programs or even education to fight off the crime rate. Regarding the undocumented immigrants, I find that idea to be a method to discretely target undocumented individuals from our governor's, Schwarzenegger, part. He proposes that we deport them for even a minor crime, now that is absurd. We shall not promote discrimination. Deporting undocumented immigrants for the sake of the state's economy, really?! My proposal is Arnold please stop investing the buget so badly and inefficiently only then you wouldn't have to hold garage sales in order to relieve California's debts.
