Lou Dobbs for Senator?

By now many know who Lou Dobbs is. Most can remember him, because he made opposing statements towards immigrants in his talk show on CNN. Well guess what? In 2012 he wants to run for senator in New Jersey!

Currently the senator of New Jersey is, Robert Mendez, a Democrat. Sen. Robert Mendez has worked on, “sponsored bills protecting citizens and permanent residents from unlawful detention and deportation and supports allowing illegal immigrants to buy health insurance from exchanges with their own money.”

People in New Jersey were surveyed in 2007, and two-thirds of New Jersey voters said, “undocumented residents hurt the country more than they help it.” They also oppose to giving illegal immigrants driver’s license.

Although there is a large population of immigrants in New Jersey, there is also a large population that opposes immigrants. Seeing this, it seems like Lou Dobbs might have a good chance of winning (let’s hope not). Hopefully he does not become a senator in New Jersey, because if he does, issues might get a lot more complicated for immigrants.

Lou Dobbs has also said that people are urging him to run for president. Dilenschneider has said that the idea of Lou Dobbs running for president was a “long way off”. Hopefully it really is a “long way off”!

Glenn Beck is the host of his own show. Glenn Beck seems to be Democratic,or maybe even part of Green Party because during the whole video he does nothing else but criticize Obama. Glenn Beck compares Obama to FDR in a sarcastic tone. Glenn Beck also points out in the video that Obama has adopted ideas that Green parties came up with first. People that are more likely to watch his show, are people who oppose Obama and his ideas.

It was kind of difficult to tell whether Bill Maher is against Obama or not. At the end he says that he was glad that Obama is president, but by the way that he talks about Obama does not really seem like he does. He basically says that he is tired of Obama getting to much publicity, and that he is not doing any changes, because he is too worried about being a celebrity rather than a president. I think that people who oppose Obama are most likely to watch this show, just like those who would watch the Glenn Beck show.

Political Cartoons

The Health Care Reform passed through House and now it is being debate in the Senate. One of the main issues that is being discussed in the Health Care Reform is whether abortion should be covered in the Health Care. As the cartoon shows above many conservatives; people who are against abortion do not think that the Health Care Reform should cover abortion and that the government should not intervene with Health Care. However many people do agree that the government should intervene with abortion.

According the author of the political cartoon, Democrats are bringing down the economy. The author believes that Democrats are creating a bigger debt and making the unemployment rate rise. As the unemployment rate rises; expands, the economy is going into a deeper hole that might be hard to get out of.

It has been twenty years since the Berlin Wall was broken apart. The Berlin Wall seperated East and West Germany. However the Berlin wall is not the only that exists, there are many borders; walls seperating various countries, as well as families. The Border that seperates the United States and Mexico is one that may activists are fighting for in order for it to not get expanded, and so that many families who are seperated by this border can be united once again.

Veterans are coming back home and do not come back the same way they left. For example, this veteran comes back with an arm missing and all he receives is a simple "Thank You". When veterans come back home, I am pretty sure that they are expecting more than a simple "Thank You", especially after they have lost body parts while fighting in war. Yes it is true that we should thank our veterans for fighting for us, defending us, but I think that the government can do a lot more for them.

Unemployment rate rises!

"Just when it was beginning to look a little better, the economy relapsed Friday with a return to double-digit unemployment for only the second time since World War II and warnings that next year will be even worse than previously thought "

Unemployment rate rises to 10.2 percent!

“…it’s going to get harder before it gets easier.”

In September the unemployment rate was at 9.8 percent. Many economists had not expected the unemployment rate to reach 10 percent so fast. Many economists had expected that by mid-2010 the unemployment rate would bet at 10.5 percent, but since unemployment rates are rising quickly they are expecting that it will hit 11 percent. The Labor Department surveyed people and found that 558,000 more people became unemployed and that about 15.7 million Americans are out of work.

Many small businesses are cutting down their employees. An example is, a small homebuilder business in Virginia who has had to cut down their employees from 350 to 100. 60 percent of employers are small businesses and because of many small businesses not hiring or firing people, it is harder for the economy to get any better.

In order for the economy to get better, people have to spend money, but with the unemployment rate rising, it is understandable that people are most likely to conserve their money.

"No one in America should ever be afraid to walk down the street holding the hands of the person they love. No one in America should be forced to look over their shoulder because of who they are or because they live with a disability,"-Obama

So far, President Obama has kept one of his many promises that he has made to lesbian and gays. President Obama signed a bill that will protect people from hate crimes based on their sexual orientation. Rea Carey an executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force feels that although the law is an accomplishment, there is still many work that should be done. Carey said the following, "We look forward to the days ahead when we will join together again to celebrate full equality and recognition of our community, including in employment, the military and in the full recognition of our families," Many gay activists are waiting for President Obama to end the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that says that marriage is between a man and a women, and that it is up to the states in whether they want to recognize gay marriages. President Obama has also promised to outlaw job discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. I agree with Obama when he says that it unjust that people get fired based on their sexual orientation; everyone deserves the right to be treated equal.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

“The new reductions will affect child welfare and children's healthcare, the elderly, state parks and AIDS treatment and prevention, going beyond the dramatic cuts that were part of the deal Schwarzenegger negotiated with legislative leaders.”

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will cut $500 million more from the budget; according to him these are necessary cuts. I think he’s just gone crazier! Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says that this budget has its good, bad an ugly. He says that the good part in the budget is that the taxes won’t raise and the government will become more efficient. Although not raising taxes is important, overall the plan is just ugly. The cuts that the plan includes are: “$489 million -- took nearly $80 million that pays for workers who help abused and neglected children; $50 million from Healthy Families, which provides healthcare to children in low-income families; $50 million from services for developmentally delayed children under age 3; $16 million from domestic-violence programs; and $6.3 million from services for the elderly. Among other reductions was $6.2 million more from parks, which could result in the closure of 100, rather than 50, of California's 279 state parks.” Looking at where the budget is being cut from, there can be a conclusion that most of the wealthy people will not get affected. Aaron McLear, the Governor’s spokesman said that "The governor understands how difficult these cuts are," Honestly I don’t think that he does because these cuts do not affect him in anyway! The governor has also said “"if our revenues drop further, to make the necessary cuts and live within our means." I don’t think that he is making necessary cuts, because he has called the last cuts “necessary”, I can’t even imagine what the next “necessary” cuts will be. Hopefully things get better soon so that there won’t be any more cuts that affect people who are low-income, the elderly and others who really need help, such as people who need AIDS treatment.

National Equality March 09!

“Obama, I know you are listening” –Lady Gaga

On Sunday thousands of gay rights activist marched to D.C to pressure president Obama to put an en to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and equality to marriage. Obama has said that he is working on repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, and that he is urging Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act(DOMA) and pass the Domestic Partners Benefit and Obligations Act. Obama also said that this Act will turn into a bill and he will sign it into a law.

During the march in Washington D.C., there were people who gave powerful speeches such as, Judy Shepard and Christine Quinn.
Judy Shepard, mother of Mathew Shepard, who was murdered because of hate crime; for being gay was part of the march and said the following, "No one has the right to tell my son whether or not he can work anywhere. Whether or not he can live wherever he wants to live and whether or not he can be with the one person he loves -- no one has that right…We are all Americans. We are all equal Americans, gay, straight or whatever." Many people feel this way, such as Lady Gaga who said that America is not free or equal if gays are not able to marry the person who they want.

Christine Quinn is the first openly speaker of the New York City Counsel. In the march she said, "Look me in the eye and tell me I am less of a person than you are," she said. "Look me in the eye and tell me my family is worth less than yours. Look me in the eye and tell me I am not an American. Well you know what, not one person in any of those places can do that, not one of them."

I really hope that Obama allows the LGBT community to get married. Both Judy and Christine made really good points during their speeches. They are right by the fact that people should stop LGBT from being with the person who they love, or making them unequal because of their sex orientation.

I am a Liberal! <3

According to the political spectrum in the typology test, I am a liberal.

“Strongest preference for diplomacy over use of military force. Pro-choice, supportive of gay marriage and strongly favor environmental protection. Low participation in religious activities. Most sympathetic of any group to immigrants as well as labor unions, and most opposed to the anti-terrorism Patriot Act. “

I don’t believe that war is the only solution to solve disagreements. War is just making the economy worst and the money being used for war should be used for education! The money can also be used to help out the needy or help improve communities.

I would agree that I am because contrary to the conservatives I believe that gays should have the right to get married. Everyone should be treated equally and should have the same equal opportunities; marriage is and opportunity that is denied to them.

Immigrants are another group in which I think deserve equal opportunities. The Dream Act is something that will really benefit many Immigrants who are in school. There are many immigrants who do really well in school but unfortunately are denied the opportunity to go to universities or colleges. I think this Act should be passed because it will change many people’s lives and will help them succeed.

Swine flu spreading and many districts without school nurses!

“As schools grapple with a resurgence of swine flu, many districts have few or no nurses to prevent or respond to outbreaks, leaving students more vulnerable to a virus that spreads easily in classrooms and takes a heavier toll on children and young adults.”

A 2008 survey by the National Association of school of nurses found that only 45% percent of public schools have full-time nurses, 30% have part-time nurses and 25% have none at all! Only in the states of California, in 2008, there was one nurse for every 2,240 students. About 500 districts in the state of California have no nurses. Because of swine flu many districts are depending on teachers, principles and secretaries who have little medical training to identify ill children and send them home. Many teachers like Robert Ellis, a first grade teacher at Washington Elementary school in Richmond, California are unsure of what symptoms to look for and are worried about the swine flu spreading in the classroom and on the impact it will have on their children and their education as well. The District is also encouraging parents that if their child is sick to not report them to school. The swine flue is being taken like the regular season flu but many are afraid that it can become deadlier because it is more contagious. The vaccine for H1N1 is said to be ready by October, but until then school nurses are planning to teach children proper classroom hygiene. This is an issue that should really be addressed it is unjust that many districts have no school nurses, and children are put at risk. I believe that every school should have at least one nurse especially when there is an illness that is really contagious and there is no vaccine ready.

“The governor must submit to judges today a proposal to reduce prison overcrowding by 40,000 inmates, as ordered. He's likely to offer a mix of old and new ideas -- and to push the midnight deadline.”

Federal Judges have asked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to come up with a proposal in order to help reduce inmates. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has asked for an extension of the deadline, and his deadline is coming to an end today at midnight. According to Michael Rothfeld, the governor’s plan consists of new and old ideas. An old idea that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has brought up is spending billions of dollars constructing new prisons. This plan would obviously take years before it can actually happen and has become dismissed. They are also planning to not monitor as much the less serious offenders and improve supervision on the more serious offenders. Immigrants are also part of the proposal. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will send undocumented prisoners to federal government so that they will be deported in order to help out the budget. I really hope that undocumented immigrants are not deported by just doing something that is not serious, and that it also does not put in danger the public safety. In order to find out how his proposal will actually work, we will have to wait until later to find out.

New Chief is Chosen

“A social worker who grew up in New York after emigrating from Cuba as a child was picked Tuesday by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to run the city's anti-gang programs.”

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa selected Guillermo Cespedes as the new Chief of the Los Angeles anti-gang programs. Part of Guillermo’s plan is to keep lights on in parks that are the most crime-ridden areas until midnight in order to help reduce crime and violence.During the summer Guillermo has made a huge impact in several communities. Guillermo has doubled the amount of programs in 16 parks to help keep teens and children out of the streets. The Programs help children and teens keep out of the streets by allowing them to play in sports and other activities. Guillermo has worked on helping out the minorities. Guillermo was a social worker and would help out struggling families by Calworks.

I really hope that Guillermo can keep on improving the anti-gang programs. I also hope that he can still keep helping the minority groups, Latinos and African Americans. I think it is really amazing how even though he had not been the Chief of the Los Angeles anti-gang programs he had already began to make changes in several communities. I believe that now that he is the Chief of the Los Angeles anti-gang programs he will make in greater changes and will help lower the gang rates in California.

Many of us wonder, when is the Afghanistan war going to end? Hasn’t it been a long time already? Shouldn’t it be coming to an end?

According to the Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the war has just begun. The American support towards the war declines and Robert Gates says that he disagrees with those that think it is time to end the war. Robert Gates believes that they have not lost control over the war and understands those who don’t support the war anymore. Robert Gates said, "The nation has been at war for eight years. The fact that Americans would be tired of having their sons and daughters at risk and in battle is not surprising." I also don’t think that it is not surprising, but what I do find surprising is that Gates says that the war is just beginning. It has been 8-years since the war has begun and to say that it has just begun, it’s crazy. Instead of sending more troops to war the money should be used to help out students. The war is one of those factors that are making this economy worst! Because it is so hard for students to pay off college many are going to war because it is their last option for them to try to get money for college if their parents are not able to pay it off but in doing so, they are putting their lives at risk. Although Robert Gates says the war is just beginning, hopefully it will end soon!

Ted Kennedy

Sen. Kennedy was a great man, and advocate who fought to obtain several benefits for minorities, immigrants and their families. Although Kennedy did not live in a place where many immigrants lived in says Russell Contreras, he was able to make a difference for them. In Fact he helped a Philippine, Leticia Hermosa who tried to come here to the United States, was not able to because during the time period in which this happened 1965, the United States immigration quota did not favor non-Western Europeans. Kennedy Pushed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which opened the “door opened for her to immigrate in 1973 to Boston, where she eventually finished school, got a law degree and became a U.S. citizen.” Kennedy didn’t make changes that would only benefit the wealthy he actually changed someone’s life and brought hope into them. Not only did Kennedy become and advocate for immigrants he was also and advocate for health care. He pushed legislation to give health care for uninsured children; I myself would have to thank him for that because I have health care. Kennedy became known as a “voice for the voiceless”. Now that Kennedy has passed away, hopefully health care for minorities is not taken away from them and hopefully things can get easier for immigrants. It would also be great if there would be more politicians like him that make changes.

Hillary Clinton inspires hope in Congo

Recently the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton made a visit to Eastern Congo in South Africa. Hillary Clinton is the first top-level American to visit Congo, says Robyn Dixon.

Hillary Clinton met with people who are the most powerless in Congo, women. During Hilary’s visit many people were surprised by the way that Hilary reacted to the many rape story’s that she heard there. There have been many rape cases in the past 13 years in Congo, approximately 200,000!! In Congo rape is used as a torturing method that is used not only on women, but also in girl. Lately men and boys are also being sexually assaulted. These people are brutally raped and end up in the hospital. An example of a woman who was brutally raped is a woman who was pregnant and lost her baby because she was raped. I do not believe that women in Congo should be suffering like this. Hillary Clinton was touched by all the stories she heard and has promised to help them out. Hillary Clinton has also inspired hope to them. They hope that Hillary Clinton will help resolve this issue and I am also hoping that she can help make a difference in Congo because this issue has remained unresolved for so many years and it is time that someone makes a difference, so that women in Congo can once again live in peace.

Why are people tortured like this? There are people in Congo who are taking their raw materials away, and Metal is one of them. Unfortunately, most of don’t know that we are helping out those who are torturing people in Congo by buying electronics and in doing so we are helping them become more powerful and women more powerless. I really hope that Hillary can make more people aware of what is going on in Congo, so that more people can try to help out women in Congo.

Inhumane CIA tactics

After the 9/11 terrorist attack the CIA used life threatening tactics in order to get information out of people who they suspected were terrorists. The CIA not only threatened the suspect’s life, but also their families. The CIA would tell the suspects that if they didn’t tell them what they wanted to know the CIA would try to make them talk by telling them that they would sexually abuse their family or mother in front of them.
Abd al-Nashiri is an example of someone who was threatened by these tactics, and not only this, The CIA not only told Abd al-Nashiri that they would sexually abuse his family and mother but, they threatened him with a unloaded gun and a drill. Another example is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the CIA interrogator told him, "if anything else happens in the United States, we're going to kill your children'". Although Khalid was the one who came up with the 9/11 attack I don’t think it was right to threaten him that way. These are tactics that I wouldn’t expect from the CIA. The Bush administration went down a "dark road of excusing torture." said the Senator Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Democratic chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which I agree with. The CIA knew that sooner or later they would be soon discovered of the torture tactics that they used. In fact, they told a suspect, "Ten years from now we're going to be sorry we're doing this (but) it has to be done". I believe that torture tactics were not a way to try and figure out information about the terrorist, especially when they were just torturing suspects. Even if Khalid had something to do with the 9/11 attack threatening him with his family was heartless, actually all these kind of tactics were. One of them in special was when an interrogator choked off the carotid artery of a detainee until he started to pass out, then shook him awake. He did this three times, says Devlin Barrett and Pamela, the associated press writers. These tactics were Inhuman, but was this the only time in which these tactics were used?

Veteran's Healthcare

During the annual veterans Foreign Wars conference President Barack Obama spoke to more than 5,500 veterans and told them that despite the fast that health care is one of the main issues that Americans are worried about, President Obama assures veterans that they will continue to have their health care. In fact, Obama told the veterans "One thing that reform won't change is veterans' healthcare…No one is going to take away your benefits. That's the truth."

President Obama also told the veterans that the war was not and option, because Al Qaeda would probably plan to kill many more Americans, and that therefore the war as necessary. The Americans forces are scheduled to leave Iraq by 2011, and president Obama pledged that in the future he would no longer send out service member unless it was truly necessary and if everything was well thought out.

During the conference president Obama also mocked the idea of a new House plan to buy a new expensive helicopter. In fact his words were the following as he drew laughter “among its other capabilities, it would let me cook a meal while under nuclear attack…let me tell you something. If the United States of America is under nuclear attack, the last thing on my mind will be whipping up a snack.” President Obama said that instead of spending money on unnecessary items like the helicopter, that the money should be put to good use. For example Obama said that the money should be used to improve mental health screening for troops and also to have more clinics where veterans can go to when they come back home.

Orange County's jail system.

During the past decades there has been many allegations that the Orange County deputies mistreat inmates. The U.S. Department of justice have the Orange County jail system under investigation which began in December and according to the "LA Times" the investigation may take longer than a year to tell whether past allegations are true. The investigations will also help to determine whether past incidents have been have been caused by deputies.

Deputies have been accused of using tasers on inmates who are handcuffed or restrained. In 2007 and 2008 many inmates died after being stunned. Earlier this year, Sheriff Sandra Hutchens ended these practices that were causing many inmates' death.
Not only, are tasers the only form in which inmates being hurt they are also being beat up because of false accusations. In 2006, an inmate was falsely accused of being a child molester and was beaten to death. The deputy was "busy" texting and watching TV, while the inmate was being assaulted for 50 minutes.
Sheriff Sandra Hutches has looked at these issues which have been brought up by federal investigators and is improving them. In the little time that she has been a sheriff she has manage to make a policy against tasers and there are also cameras in the Theo Lacy barracks.
